6230 vs Siemens S65
Review
comparison - Nokia 6230 vs Siemens
S65
This is no David & Goliath story, in fact it's
more like Goliath vs Goliath. These two handsets are probably the best selling
mid range phones on the market at the moment (Oct 04).
Following in the footsteps of other Nokia classics including the 3210, 6310(i),
8910(i), the new 6230 has taken center stage and is cleaning up. Available on
the big 4 UK networks it has become one the biggest sellers of the Summer/Autumn
season. There is a major reason for this, it's a return to form from Nokia. No
ridiculous formats just a well specked good looking phone with the features that
most want.
It would be easy to compare the K700i from Sony Ericsson to the 6230, virtually
identical specs its just a case of choosing the phone or manufacturer you prefer.
However, for us there is one rival from Siemens that takes everything that is
great
about
the 6230 and then adds some, the overlooked S65.
The S65 was released quite some time after the 6230, is higher priced but higher
spec. It's one of the phones that catches your eye, make you go ooh and aah.
Its classy, well built and feature packed.
So how do these behemoths measure up?

Choosing between the
2.
As you can see from above the two phones are virtually the same spec. The S65
has the edge on camera quality, producing good quality pictures. The 6230 camera
although clear is still a generation 1 digital camera. Ok they saved the megapixel
camera for the 7610, but as far as we are concerned this is a major omission.
The S65 also has the sedge on screen size, this large screen is a joy to use,
great for games and menu navigation.
The 6230 itself is a better size , there is not much in it really, but somehow
feels
smaller. It feels and looks like a Nokia should.
 |
Navigation/menus are presented well on each handset. The Nokia menu is familiar,
logical and easy to use. Its performance however is marred by the terrible 4
way navigation key. Try pressing the middle of the key to select that part of
the
menu, and
whoops I seem to have gone to another part of the menu. The performance is also
let down by the screen size, tiny by today's standards.
The
S65 does
not
suffer
with these problems. With a large screen and well spaced keys the Siemens S65
seems easier to navigate despite the menu system being less intuitive than the
6230
What we think
The 6230 is a true return to form, only let down by minor omissions in spec including
megapixel camera and screen size. The 6230 also has a built in radio and comes
with its own stereo headset.
The S65
is a very high spec phone that is beautiful to look at. The menu may not be as
friendly as the Nokia but it is hard to fault. Siemens have been somewhat tight
when it comes to bundled extras. Unlike the fantastic Siemens SL45 of former
years you get no extras whatsoever with the package. If it had been bundled with
a data cable and headset then this contest would already be over.
The
Final verdict
For us the S65 is the winner, it may not have the Nokia menu system
but as an all round device it is the current benchmark and probably the best
looking handset on the market (excluding the V3 of course)
