Motorola V3 RAZR Review

The eagerly anticipated Motorola V3 is finally here. But what's all the fuss about?

Simple, the V3 is the only phone in the last few years that really innovates in beautiful, sharp aesthetic design combined with all the features you would expect from a top end handset.

Motorola have a history when it comes to bringing out innovative handsets, anyone remember the Startac? This handset is the latest in Motorola's handset evolution and is bound to upset the other manufacturers.

Anodized Aluminum Case

Built in speakerphone (Full Duplex)

Missing features - Anything missing?

Lack of video capture - Although the V3 has video playback it cannot capture video

No Megapixel camera - The v3 does have a good quality VGA camera which looks good on the excellent screen. Shame its not megapixel

V3 in Use

Motorola's mobile phone user menus have changed with recent releases. Those familiar with the V300/500/525/600 will recognise the menu system instantly. It has changed slightly with new background graphics behind the menus but otherwise remains the same.

The keys are well spaced and a joy to use, even those with large hands will have no problem. The display is crystal clear and works well in all light conditions.

Hot Keys

Hot keys include : Volume up/down on the side of the phone. Web access, operator key (main keypad). Messaging key (main keypad). There are various other keypad shortcuts including another hotkey known as the Smart Key on the side of the phone which attempts to predict your next keypad entry for regularly performed actions.

This menu system is of course a massive improvement over the old school Motorola systems which many users steer away from. The menu system is mostly logical and you can find most of the features you are looking for within 2 layers deep.

The v3 has a good sized screen too, so your not squinting when navigating the menu.

Menu/Navigation

It is not difficult to learn the menu system of this phone, whilst not as polished as some from Sony Ericsson or Nokia it is still user friendly by Motorola's standards.

Sending Text Messages with iTAP

The V3 uses iTAP word recognition when entering text on the screen. Whilst not as user friendly as predictive text found on Nokias and other manufacturers phones it is very useful all the same.

Verdict

Pro's

+ The V3 is bound to become THE classic of 2004.
+ It is difficult not to marvel at this feat of engineering.
+ Quite simply this handset oozes class.
+ Motorola have created a product that is enjoyable from the box, to the bundled goodies to the handset itself
+ Beautifully crafted, robust

Cons

- No Megapixel camera
- No Video Playback

Our thoughts

In a world where new handsets are appearing every month deciding on one that is not going to look outdated within a couple of months is not an easy task. With the advent of constantly changing mobile technology most new handsets become yesterdays technology quickly. Motorola however have created a product that should stand the test of time and still be desired in years to come. We can live without the megapixel technology and the lack of video playback, this is a technology statement that will have other manufacturers green with envy.

Our Ratings

Aesthetics - 10/10
Usability - 7/10
Value for Money - 9/10 (good savings with bundled accessories)
Desirability - 10/10

Overall - 9/10 - Awesome, sell anything to get one, do some overtime, get a second job. THE must have of 2004
